On the Destinations page for Ecuador, LP says "Travellers should avoid this area (particularly the towns of Banos, Ambato, Guaranda and Riobamba) while aid and recovery supplies are brought in".
Can anyone confirm whether there are still problems traveling in this area, in particular by bus from Quito through to Cuenca via Riobamba?
Thanks. |

Tungurahua is a very active volcano that has been spewing ash for the last few years, with a couple of major lava eruptions. It could blow big time tommorrow, or maybe not for another 20 to 50 years, so just make your plans. Only the highway from Ambato to Banos (and on to the oriente) would be seriously threatened in a worst case scenario.
Dont worry, all is well in all of those towns, everything is up and running just like usual. |
