I am planning to move to Cuenca within the next year, but I would like some advice as to whether or not I should start out working at a hostal for room and board until I find a house to buy (I 'm not rich, so something affordable but nice) and a job. I speak fluent Spanish and have been to Ecuador 2 times but I am wondering which bigger cities are affordable. Unfortunately, it is tough to find this type of info by just doing simple research...

Any help is greatly appreciated

If you have an investment income of $50K per year, you could live very comfortably in Ecuador. My wife and I just purchased a new Penthouse Condo in beautiful Cuenca. If you have the ability to buy an apartment, you can buy new ones from $40K up. If not, you can rent from $350 - $450 a month. Not counting rent, you can easily live on $1,200.00 USD per month. Cuenca is beautiful, safe, and very clean. It is the cultural capital of Ecuador and the people are wonderful.
