My wife and I are traveling to the Galapagos in November - October and need information on boats. We've been quoted good prices on the Pelikano
and Fragata, which I think are tourist-class. Does anyone have any
information or experience with those boats, or can anyone recommend
others?
Thanks! |

Hi,
I have been to the Galapagos several times and have sent many travelers there. From what I have heard, the Pelikano and Fragata are alright for what they are - tourist class boats. I have seen both of these vessels, but did not venture aboard them. There is another vessel, the Darwin, a tourist class vessel, which might give you a little bit better value for money.
For a really rewarding Galapagos experience, I would probably stay away from the larger luxury vessels. The high number of passengers (up to 90!!) detract from your enjoyment of the scenery, the wildlife and the activities like snorkeling and swimming etc.. But you also should keep the quality of services in mind when you make your decision. On some of the cheaper boats, the guides are not always so knowledgeable or their English is lacking.
I would recommend the First-Class vessels Cruz del Sur or Estrella del
Mar (both of which I have been on). They have a maximum of 16
passengers aboard and equipment for snorkeling etc. They have excellent food and well-trained naturalist guides who take their mission seriously. Please contact me if you need more information. |
