Are there many local folks who ride bikes around town? Would it be nuts to get around town during the day on a bike-traffic/lunatic drivers wise?

I can't remember exactly when it is, but every other Sunday (or the first and second sunday of each month....something like that), much of new town is closed to cars and the cyclists are out in abundance. A lot of the riders were extranjeros, but there were a few locals mixed in. Other than that Sunday, I didn't see a lot of bike riders in Quito...the good public transport system combined with cheap taxis seem to fulfill most transport needs.

Many parts of Quito are closed to traffic each Sunday and hoards of bike riders bboth the locals and the tourists take to the streets to enjoy the streets having no traffic. The Colonial area has many closed off streets each Sunday as do part of the city to the South. So make use of streets closed to traffic on Sundays and use the cheap and frequent public transport systems the rest of the time.
