Were you able to get the visa the same day? Or did you have to go back the next day? Do you know of any hostals close by?

Can't help on the embassy part, but was up in GYE a several months ago and stayed at a place called Hotel Alexander, which was the best I could find in advance (criteria: decent price + decent looking + could book by phone in advance). Think it was about USD 25 per night. Also, the city itself was much better than I thought it would be, and if you have the time you should go to the Malecon and Faro as they are both worth seeing. Art museum has a/c, but that's it's only plus Wink There are also several good sized malls which have a little bit different stuff then here in Lima if you want to do some shopping.
