We spent two weeks studying Spanish in Cuenca in April-May 2006. Before we signed up, we checked out several schools, including CEDEI and Sampere. Both have excellent reputations, but charge A LOT. Instead of paying CEDEI $690 each for a two week (minimum) program of 15 hours of Spanish a week and a homestay, we went with Abraham Lincoln Center on Calle Borrero near Calle Larga. This school specializes in teaching English to young Ecuadorians, but has two excellent Spanish teachers. We studied with Enrique, who is personable and very good - he specializes in the study of grammar. Raul is supposed to be very good, also, esp. in conversational Spanish. A good plan might be to study some with each teacher. A bonus is that you pay for each class the day before and aren't obligated to sign up for a minimum number of classes. Fee for a private one-on-one session is only $5 an hour (we paid $9/hour for the two of us.) The school also arranged a good homestay at $20 a day for the two of us, including 3 meals a day and laundry!

I was in Ecuador in august and we went to CEDEI, of the 26 other people that I went went we all agreed this was the best language school we had ever been to. They have a teacher for every level.
