For thr Alausi-Riobamba section, yes I have been told it is possible to go back by train, and you can also buy the ticket roundtrip - most folks start in the AM in Riobamba b/c it's the best chance of a good view of Chimborazo (mornings are always clearest in the highlands, but say in august it's almost always clear all day...) and then folks like returning by bus b/c it's so much faster. so you should have your choice of seats for a ride back....
